Dr Rodney A Hughes, Rheumatologist, Runnymede Hospital, Surrey

Dr Rod Hughes
Consultant Rheumatologist

I live in Churt, a village in the Surrey Hills south of Guildford with my wife, Alison, and two sons Oliver and Patrick, now 15 and 17, and two labradors Paro and Poppy.

I am President and ex Chairman of Churt Juniors Football club which I established in 2005 and which now has over 200 children playing football in the East Hampshire League.

My aim is to provide a quick diagnosis and optimal management of all musculoskeletal diseases; from young to old age.

As a rheumatologist the conditions I see most frequently are conditions that involve inflammation of the joints, inflammatory arthritis, most common of these is rheumatoid arthritis.  These diseases are common and can cause a significant loss of function and quality of life unless managed properly.

I provide diagnosis and treatment for all major aspects of rheumatology symptoms including joint pain and inflammation, back pain and bone, soft tissue, and muscle pain.  These musculoskeletal conditions, that do not obviously need operations, are best diagnosed and treated through a rheumatologist first.

I can often get joints feeling much better either with the help of physiotherapy or other multi-disciplinary inputs such as occupational therapy, whilst the use of injections, tablets and medicines can damp down symptoms to start to prevent diseases causing joint damage.
